Question about bell cloches
« on: April 19, 2011, 13:37 »
OK, so the lettuce were getting eaten by slugs during the night, and pecked at by birdies during the day - so I went to Homebase and bought a bunch of bell cloches.  Now these particular ones don't have the vents at the top, and the condensation build up is considerable.

My question to you is, do I need to vent the cloches every day by lifting the edges?  I don't really want to have to do this as I've banked up soil over the edges to keep the slugs off.

What's the best way to deal with the condensation?  Do I really need to?  I've never used bell cloches before so I'm clueless in this respect.

Thanks in advance,

Eric

slugs live in the soil, not just on the surface so banking up doesn't stop them anyway :(

Bell cloches will provide much too warm an environment for lettuce, which prefer coolish conditions.

In the humid environment you have created they will just get mould :(

cover with bird netting, if they are a problem, and use some slug pellets, or if you prefer not to use pellets, use beer traps etc

Thank you for the prompt reply.  OK, I'll stick a bunch of beer traps in and see what happens.
