Outdoor Tomatoes and cucumbers
« on: April 17, 2011, 10:12 »
Hi,

I'm new to this allotment lark,

any advice on what species of Tomatoes and cucumber would grow best outside, we don't have an greenhouse or anywhere to put one!

Can we grow them? we are in the tropics of Leeds!

Thanks in advance!!

I'm a fan of Red Alert tomatoes as they grow and produce extrememly quickly which partly compensates for having to start them off and plant them out later.

A good outdoor cucumber for me has been "Marketmore" as long as you can get them to live long enough through the cool days to mature and produce (but that seems to be true of most cucumber varieties!)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

I had great success with F1 incas (outdoor plum variety) last year.
this is the third and last flush I picked last year (mix of f1incas, red alert and indian tom)
One kid is handful. Two kids.... Example for chaos theory. Hats off to my mum who managed three...

I am growing these this year and Shirley f1 G/House toms which I have grown before and are really nice, also Brandywine which I have never grown before.
99% Organic and 1% Slug Pellets.

Allotment holder since 27th May 2007.

Brandywine are lovely toms, quite big if I recall. I grew Apricot brandywine very early on in my growing days  :)

Had some success with Roma (had to get them reasonably biggish on the window sills and greenhouse before risking outside) and even did OK with (spare) MoneyMakers too although I did give them a bit of a windbreak with an old shower screen.

For both the race is between ripening and blighted....

Just along the A65 a handful of miles so the climate is probably the same!
The Dales - probably fingerprint marks where God's hand touched the world
