Holding off til May
« on: April 20, 2011, 00:22 »
Its hard on the urge to get going but as we are on holiday in the last week in April, I have decided to hold off sowing a lot of stuff I would have planted towards the end of April until the first week of May; Runner beans, squashes, corgettes, pumpkins and sweetcorn.

I figure they will all catch up rather than risk them germinating and then dying through lack of watering.

I sowed my squash way too early this year and I'm regretting it now. I've got the first flowers forming on them already!

My seeds will have to wait until after Easter hols! I think that because the ground is quite warm for the time of year they should get going pretty quickly once they're in.

Is there anything that it really IS too late to sow? I've only just finished clearing and preparing the ground for my new plot so can only start planting now. Onions? Potatoes? Garlic? Broad beans?? All too late?

You are too late for garlic..it needs a few frosts to split into cloves.  It's possibly too late for parsnips, although you could harvest them smaller?
It's also very late for chillies

I would try everything else though....

Have a look at Johns advice

Onions too I reckon. My understanding is that they are governed by day length, so running late is not really an option with them.

My parsnips in loo rolls still only have their seed leaves - no true leaves yet.Same about last year but mine soon filled up when planted so not too late

I would also agree on the parsnips.

My personal experience, and I'm in Cumbria, is that you will still be okay. My parsnips are still in their seed bed and will go out when ready. I stayed patient last year and was rewarded with a fabulous harvest...I just finished the last of them one week ago and there was nothing but positive in my results.
