Mine is next to our shed, but I didn't plant it there. I'll be moving it in the autumn. I think rhubarb will grow anywhere that sunny and nutrient rich. It loves well rotted manure and will grow large in the next few years. You shouldn't harvest it for a good year or two (two is better) so it gets really established. Harvest any this year and it could take a long time to recover.

Wherever you put it, a plant should last 10 years and will cover a substantial area..I'm always surprised how big mine gets around now!

Also it is poisonous raw so just beware if you have pets (or children) who are likely to try and munch it!

First I have heard of it being poisonous, nothing better than raw rhubarb dipped in sugar. You may have misheard about the poisonous bit Katiekate. The general rule is don't pick it after June because the stalks get acidic and bitter, but even then, I pick mine till about August and then leave it to regenerate for next year, never noticed any difference in taste either.

Happily we are both right Robbo! According to Wikipedia the leaves contain a poison, but you have to eat a lot sour tasting leaves to do much harm.. So I guess you're more right.. And I will now try the stalks with sugar!!

I put three crowns in last year.  This year they are all up and growing away.  One of them has flowered, so I soon cut that off.  I will leave them unpulled this year and look forward to harvests from next year onwards.
