Can you not restrict them to part of the lawn?

Hubby is going to get really stressed when the lawn is a barren wasteland of holes and not a blade of grass!  I was in denial until my hens did what hens do naturally - destroy lawns.
When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!

Good Luck!

My chooks turned my lawn into glastonbury within 3 months and the only option was to build them a walk in run. They paced and paced for the first few days but are as happy as larry now. (The garden never recovered though so is in the process of being gravelled as I'm too impatient to re-turf)!

We have had to corden half the grass off to let it recover but now the other half is just earth.
Gonna wait until the grass on the other side is greener and 5ft tall then let them on it  ;)

If I were you, I would take them indoors every other night to give the lawn a rest.  They could sit and watch TV with you and keep Maggie company too!

well being on a newish estate where the gardens seem to have been done very quickly we have always struggled getting a nice green lawn, so i had been getting Greenthumb round and we had lovely grass!  So so much anymore  the chickens themselves havent been too bad i suppose its more the lack of grass treatments.  My girls go out between 10 and get shut away about 4 (although its ealier at the moment as trying to eat more layer). In wet weather the girls were only getting a hour or two as our 'garden' has always turned instantly to bog with the slightest rain even pre girls.

I contacted Greenthumb the other day  about their lawn care and chickens, and they said to the girls would need to be kept off for two week.  We are going away for 2 weeks in the summer so i'm thinking of contacting them to see if there is something they could give then to give the lawn a boost!

Poor lawn has to contend with 2 boys and 3 guinea pigs too!

Sorry to ramble
11 Chickens (Rhode Rock, Bluebell, Copper Black, Columbine, Coucou, Mystery Hen, Clarance Court, Araucana, brown hen ) , 3 Cats (1 mog, 1 bengal, 1 Bengal x),  2 Little Boys, 1 dog (Golden Retriever) and 1 Husband
