twiggy sticks have always worked well with me - I used to erect canes with string along the row but found the sticks work much better, and also free if you can find a good supply (I use hedge trimmings)

I have put the first of this year's peas in, but am wondering whether to use pea nets or just canes.  I have always used pea nets before but don't really like having the tangly plastic things around the plot as I'm sure they're a hazard to wildlife.

Will my peas do okay without nets, or is there any alternative to nets anyone can suggest?

I tried pea nets but found them too fussy to use and easily tangled.  Now I use a stiff plastic mesh (of about 2 inches gape) which I put on both sides of the peas with good results.  It's obtainable from garden centres at about £4 per metre  and lasts for years.

My raised beds have 2' chicken wire round (to keep out chickens) and I find a motley collection of different sized  garden twigs and sticks dotted round with some taller bamboos will do the trick. The chicken wire holds it all in.
I've tried the netting and as said already, it's fiddly and tangles.

bought metal mesh covered in green rubber like plastic. cut it length and used bamboo stakes, weave them in and out into the ground and weave one long bamboo across the top, helps to keep them straight and prevent them rolling in on themselves. works a treat.  8)

might get some more. leaving too much space between each row  and could get 3 more rows in

Please consider using cut branches instead.  Lots of little bits on them for the little tendrils to wrap around!  And they look nice.
When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!

Have a closer look at DD's picy, more so in the background, perhaps some one else is doing the same thing!

I use bean netting (the large square stuff) which goes over canes in a A frame sort of way, however always wanting to break tradition I might try a DD frame for a change on one of the rows and see how it works.

I made soe pea support things, from chicken wire and bamboo. They are very sturdy , all my beds are same width so they can be used for different things, later on or next season

I used DD's method last year (over the objection of my neighbors and gardener). It worked a treat...looks great, easy access to produce and easy to rotate in the garden. I'm now doing the same this year as are several of the individuals who told me "It won't work".

I'd never go back to the mesh/wire method.
