Last year we planted Evesham Special sprouts (Wilko seeds) and although nearly all of the sprouts were blown.Not a complete disaster as they were very tasty.Could someone perhaps tell me why this might have happened and maybe recommend another variety.

Sprouts will blow if your soil is not firm enough.  They hate loose soil.

You do need to ensure that the soil is rich enough for them as they like a fertile soil. You also need to ensure that the soil is neutral and not acid which is why adding lime is recommended.

Not only do they hate loose soil, they hate the soil drying out so need regular watering if there is a long dry spell. Likewise they need enough space between them.

Same thing happened to me with the same brand and it was because I didn't water enough in a long dry spell. Hey ho - lesson learned and as I didn't use the whole packet well this year, I can try to do better.

The white fly also love them so cover with enviormesh or debris netting.

Thanks for the advice.We had a really dry Apr/May and there was a lot of white fly which we found very difficult to get rid of. So we will plant the same again this year as we have the seed but look after them with more care.
