Probably best in 3" pots, 1 clove per pot. They need to be growing now so I would get them in ASAP.

Even if they don't have any imported diseases on them, they won't be varieties which are designed for this climate.  You may be lucky but don't be surprised if you're not.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Cheers Yorkie:

I won't be mate, I have read up on this stuff on the site and I'm just doing it to see if I can grow it from supermarket.

As my title says the best way to learn to do something is to do something It will be fun to see what happens. I'm not expecting anything :D :D :D

Have about 20 (supermarket) cloves in a gro-bag and they seem to dying. tops going yellow but had a root around and the bulbs are growing nicely.

Any Ideas why te tops seem to be dying off ?

i took advice on this forum a while ago and avoided the supermarket cloves, the ones online aren't that expensive and they seem readily available in garden centres

i have about 60 pots on the go with the cloves in which i planted successionaly and 98% have sprouted and are coming along nicely

i started them off in my 4 tier greenhouse, left for a week or two closed (was still frosty then), then left for a couple of weeks with door open. they are now on patio steps hardening off for planting in the allotment

all seems well and glad i took the advice kicking around this forum

ps. from what i've read if you plant now you may be looking at harvesting next spring?

Wozza: two possible reasons: as you're not likely to be using a garlic variety which is suitable for this climate, they may have got too cold or otherwise not be suited.

Just as likely, is a nitrogen deficiency.  Give them a dose of fertiliser, preferably one high in nitrogen but if you haven't got anything else then a balanced one will be better than nothing.

I planted some that I bought from the local farm shop (grown a few miles away). That way I know that it grows well in this area and it's still cheaper that the ones I bought mail order.
