Red Bum
« on: August 20, 2007, 18:19 »
Hi all any ideas ,we have 4 chickens of different breeds one of them .a warren ,has a very bald red bum , none of the others have this , is this being caused by a parasite , is she likely to  be doing it herself or is everyone else picking on her. We have seen no indication of bullying , only the usial squabbles over food they have a large run so are not on top iof each other any suggestions.

Welcome to the forum Mick  :D

All of your ideas could be right !  She could be being plucked by another hen, or doing it herself.  I presume you've checked for lice.  Are her stools normal or does she have diarrhea ?  She may also be moulting.  Keep any eye on her and separate her from the othersw if there are any wounds.  I had a little brown hen who had a bald botty nearly all her life

Red bums are a sign of good health in a chicken. You don't usually notice unless they have lost some feathers in that area
