Garlic rot.
« on: April 02, 2011, 11:44 »
I notice a couple (2 of 16) of my garlic plants are looking very sorry for themselves lately. Based on previous years if I lift them they will have a white / blue rot on them.

Is it likely to be white rot or simply just a bulb rotting ?

Other bulbs, 8" spacing look fine for now. I've had beans in this bed for the past 2 years before then it was grass. Garlic was from a proper supplier and not saved, planted tail end of last year.

I wonder if they were planted on a spot where there was a small clump of something that held in the wet. If your others are ok, I wouldn't worry that they were planted too early. Maybe these bulbs had it before you planted them - I sometimes see it on onion sets I buy and I throw them out.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I get that on occasion as well, an iffy bulb or two from a supplier that ends up rotting.

The rest look fine so I wouldn't worry about it.

I've seen the same on the onions too. I can live with the odd iffy bulb but Im getting concerned as its showing up every year and in every area of the garden.

I think it the odd bulb because if was a serious soil problem the other bulbs would be infected by now. I have seen this blue/white rot on bulbs such as daffs and tulips i have forgotten to plant.
