Courgettes not fruiting
« on: June 19, 2011, 16:18 »
I have two courgette plants each of which have many flowers and look very healthy.  However there is no sign of them becoming courgettes.  do they need to be pollinated?  If so, how?

Many courgettes often just make male flowers at the start, a bit of patience is all that's required.

The females have a small courgette behind the flower and only these will make fruit. Pollinating these can help.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Pick a male flower, peel off the petals and make sure the daddy pollen touches the mummy pollen.  (You know what I mean).  8)

According to Gardeners world low temperatures and lack of sun favour production of male flowers so this often happens in early summer. It also says drought has a similar effect though. So don't panic just yet.

I'm happy to say that after weeks and weeks of producing only male flowers, my 6 courgette plants now all seem to have one or more female flowers coming, so hopefully my courgette glut should be starting soon :)

as DD says give it time, this is quite normal to begin with, before long you will be sick of the site of courgettes
