Old Fertilisers etc
« on: March 29, 2011, 12:35 »
I have a collection of plant food and sprays in my potting shed (nothing illegal!)
They will have got pretty cold over the winter so I was wondering if they are still effective after being frozen, or would it be better to buy new stuff every year.
I guess if cold = bad, then I should not have put the stuff I have bought new this year out there yet  ???
Somehow I don't think I will get away with overwintering plant food indoors. Filling all the windowsills in spring is pushing it

Not quite sure whether all your items are liquid or some are solids..........

Anything solid should be fine unless it has got damp, in which case it will almost certainly have gone lumpy and therefore be very difficult to use.

Liquids should be OK (if in "trigger bottles" take the top off and make sure the contents hasn't started to degrade (lots of sediment is not good news; apart from anything else it will probably block the filter and/or nozzle.)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Mine weren't even in a shed during the really cold weather, but in a plastic airtight box outside.

I am working on the assumption they'll be fine  :)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I wanted to plant out some seed potatoes in sacks today and came across the remainder of last years box of potato fertiler. The box was slightly damp after being in the plastic shed all winter, but when i used it there were hardly any clumps and it all poured quite easily. Whether or not the nutrients are still going to be beneficial, i don't know, but hopefully it will give the spuds a bit of a boost.

I would work on the assumption that they'll be OK. They may have degraded to some extent and be less effective (but not necessarily so), but are unlikely to have broken down into anything harmful to the plants - so nothing to lose by using them up  ;)
