Pomodorino tomatoes
« on: March 19, 2011, 16:45 »
Its a long shot, but I was wondering if any of you knowledgable types know whether the 'pomodorino' tomatoes they sell in sainsburys are an F1 variety?

Only, my son is rather taken with the flavour so I was going to see if I can grow some from a few seeds salvaged before he scoffs them all but I was wondering if they are likely to grow true or not.

very unlikely they'll be true :(

supermarket varieties are usually grown in huge glass/poly houses under strictly controlled conditions, and often on grafted rootstocks.

You could try a couple of course, but don't bank on them growing/tasting the same for you ;)

Thats what I figured. Ah well, I'll give them a whirl and see what happens.

Nothing ventured, eh!

the trouble with Googling is that pomodorino, simply means small/cherry tomato in Italian :)

:D Hope it works for you. When I googled it I came up with someone's blog on exactly the same subject which seemed a bit of a phaff about washing and drying the seeds. I couldn't post it here as it was obviously part of a competetive site.

Growing them in a different climate may well affect the skin texture and taste.
There's also the law of S** which says that next time you go in a garden centre you will spot the Italian seeds that are now more and more widely available over here   :)
Unless otherwise stated it can be assumed ALL posts are by Pa Snip

You can guarantee it.  If that happens I might buy some, if my youngest is behaving himself that day.

The worst that will happen is the ones I did yesterday won't grow. I won't have lost anything as I should (crosses fingers) have some more tomatoes coming up soon and as the boy is the only one that really eats them, I'm sure that will be plenty.

Can't be doing with 'competitive', I shall continue bumbling and hoping for the best. :D

Nowt wrong with a good bit of bumbling.

Your thread has made me start wondering just how many tomato seeds that we haven't deliberately sown will once again germinate in the ground this year .   :D

I'm sure I'll have a few of those too. Although they tend to be a bit premature here and then a little bit of frost sees them off.

I shall continue my bumbling and post the results later in the season. :)
