Pancake day offering from my Higgledy Harriets
« on: March 15, 2011, 10:01 »
These were from my Higgledy Harriets on pancake day.  Almost too nice to break, but I do like pancakes - must say I didn't have to use them all though - the rest are in the inccy ;)

all the best

Oh they're beautiful!  :)

And what a lovely photo with the old farmhouse table, the old pan and the stunning markings on the eggs.

I don't know what pancake day is, but I think every day could be pancake day if you had eggs like that!

Naughty me - I should have said Shrove Tuesday - which of course is the day before the beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday.

Traditionally it was a time for using up fats and sweet stuff before the Lenten Fast, and I suppose as there were eggs around Pancakes were on the menu.

As we are now a "multi-faith" society, Pancake Day seems to mean more than Shrove Tuesday to the majority of folk

Glad you like the eggs though -  I am particulary pleased with them as it is my own breeding which has produced these birds, which I have named Higgledy Harriets  :)

all the best

Thanks for that - it was a little boy who named them, he had come with his Mum who was buying some hens.  There are quite a few photos on my website

They're lovely.  It's a good job you're too far away from me and I've promised myself no more girlies!

Yes I have had to promise OH no more girlies for a while as well.  I've managed to get 4 this spring and we now have 3 set-ups in operation to feed, water and maintain at the mo  ;)

My day off today so he has let them all out.  His first day letting the 6 weeks chicks out so was a little shocked as the little horrors dived at him as he put the chick crumb dish in

I'm up to 13 girlies now as I took on my mum's favourites after a fox got some of hers.  She was just so upset by it all that she didn't want to risk it happening again...

13 is far too many (they all free range around the garden) - especially now they are all laying and I can hear them on a morning cackling over their fresh new egg, one after the other!  It doesn't bother me in the slightest but I do hope the neighbours don't mind!

It has crossed my mind on more than one occasion.  It's a bit of a wierd set up where we live though, because despite us sharing garden boundaries, they're actually five minutes away to their front door.
As the weather gets better, hopefully I'll see them over the wall and can hand some over  :)

I gave some to my neighbours (not very close as we have a beck in between us) and now they have their own chickens - light sussex, araucanas and Barbu d'uccle.

Cool - populating the neighbourhood with chickens via stealth tactics  ;)

Our other neighbours love our hens and often bring their grandkids around to visit them, armed with left over veggies from Sunday dinner.   :)  :)
