Strawberries in raised bed - second year
« on: March 15, 2011, 11:36 »
My wife and I planted some strawberry plants that we bought from a garden centre in a raised bed last Spring (April I think).

They did pretty well and produced a fair amount of strawberries.

Due to a busy family life we didn't get around to doing anything with the runners - the bed has pretty much left as is since last summer. So my question is - is it possible that the plants will produce fruit again this year and do we have to do anything to help them along?

Many thanks,
Rick

Strawberry plants are usually reckoned to be past their best after 3 years and are therefore replaced (usually by their "offspring".)

Yours should therefore be good for a couple more years, and of course you have more new plants which might well need moving to ensure they all have enough room. Weeding and a bit of fertiliser at some point would help make sure they give of their best again this year.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

OK that's great thanks.

I will weed and add some compost to the bed.
