Tayberries Anyone ???
« on: March 12, 2011, 10:55 »
Hi - I've just bought a Tayberry plant from my local Focus - its very young and not even in a pot (its roots are wrapped - if you know what I mean).  I don't usually buy plants like this but
it looks healthy and I have the perfect spot for it ;) it doesn't say how old it is so I just wondered how any of you would treat it this first year? :)

Soak it in some water for an hour or two (after unwrapping the plastic of course ::) ) Then plant it out in a hole so that the bottom of its stem is just above the ground, add a bit of BFB or bonemeal to the hole to help establish the plant.

You most probably wont get much of a crop this year, but it should increase year on year, i would just leave it to it for this year, however it will need supporting as they are vigorous plants which can take up quite a bit of space.

Pruning - Prune off any dead and old wood in the autumn but not the new shoots as these are what crop the following year, so you wouldn't get a harvest if you prune them.
If you want to be happy for a short time - get drunk.

If you want to be happy for a long time - fall in love.

If you want to be happy forever - take up gardening!

Good advice from Jamie. I bought a tayberry last year, just moved it so it has the space it needs now, will be putting up wires to train it on this year.

Last year didn't get many berries, but the shoots that grew now have growing buds which will fruit this year. Eagerly awaiting first proper crop in a few months.

Wear gloves if you can when handling and pruning them, the thorns are tiny but very sharp, and stay in the paws for ages...

Just a warning....
I bought mine from Ken Muir a couple of years ago, didn't get much at all first year but the new "canes" (?) grew about 10 ft in each direction!!
I've got 4 wires along the fence so did the "wave" method of tying up last year which means you need a shorter width each side.
I was also advised by them to not plant with other fruits.
Hoping I'll get some this year!

Interesting that Vietta.

I mentioned in the hello forum when I started here, that we have re-inherited the original plot we left in 1989, and when we cleared it recently, there was what looks suspiciously like a Tayberry, which we'd left all those years ago...

Can't wait to see if it is though! If it isn't, well I also can't wait to see what it really is!

Once made loganberry wine which was very palletable - I'm sure tayberries would work to a similar recipe if you end up with lots...

Just wondering whether it is safe to move a tayberry bush - it's a couple of years old.

You should be fine Azazello, not sure when the fruit will appear though.

We moved some of ours, and they went mad and fruited all over the place, but I think that was an autumn transplant.

They do grow like weeds though - and as above, wear gloves!

I grew tay , logan and black berries for the first time last year, and even though the plants were `new` they gave me loads of fruit to freeze.I grew them all in BIG tubs because I didn`t know if we were being allowed to keep the allotments.I just kept them all well watered and fed and they did very well.
