old hen
« on: March 09, 2011, 22:51 »
I have a five year old Buff Orpington hen who hasn't been acting right lately. She is all puffed up and is pasting in the back. I just de-wormed them all incase it was worms. She is eating and drinking a little.Any idea what could be wrong with her???

Has she just stopped laying?  Could she be egg bound?  Does she seem soft and swollen underneath between her legs, running a temperature?  Could be many things including egg yolk peritonitis.  A vet visit may be best if you can't pin it down.  Obviously at 5 years old she's getting old now.

Best of luck

Unfortunately my poor hen didn't make it :( I'm thinking it was just old age cause everyone else is acting fine. But thank you very much for your help!

So sorry, Princesspoultry.  Hens are very good at hiding when they are unwell until it is too late.  :(

As they get older they become more susceptible to infections just like us and sucomb to things which when younger they'd fight off.

Sorry your old girl didn't pull though princesspoultry.
