Mycoplasma and colloidal silver
« on: March 09, 2011, 10:51 »
Hi everyone. I have noticed this morning that one of my hens has the early symptoms of Myco. I've phoned the vet but he cannot get the Tylan for me until tomorrow. I have colloidal silver, but have never been much of a fan as it has long term health issues (liver failure with excessive use). Has anyone on here used it successfully to treat myco? I only intend to use it until I can get hold of the Tylan, but want to start combatting the infection before it gets too much of a hold. Does anyone also know the doseage as I cannot find the information sheet that came with it for love nor money.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

I have used it before out of desperation and to be fair it only seemed to make a difference for at best a day or two. After I used it someone started a topic on here which I read and the general opinion was not to use it. If the vet can get A/B's for tomorrow then your best chance is to hold out, especially if its only just coming on.

That's what I thought as I've never been much of a fan of it, but thought I'd try and stop it in its tracks before it became more established. I'm annoyed really that it has surfaced again but realise that you can't rid the birds of the infection, just keep it to a minimum. I've isolated her now and will be down to the vets as soon as the Tylan arrives tomorrow.

I know how you feel, one of mine got it twice, and fortunately only one other one suffered with it, although two did die during the time I had mycoplasma going around but didn't show the same effects. So far, touch wood its not come back.

One of my new pullets had a sniffle, so I contacted their breeder and he recommended colloidal silver.  I didn't use it (I didn't have any on hand) so obviously this isn't the first-hand experience you're looking for, but I do trust his advice and will be getting some for future use.

This breeder currently has 1400 birds and has been breeding for many years.  He says he rarely has to resort to antibiotics as he uses colloidal silver as soon as he sees any symptoms of respiratory infections.
