Chicken poo
« on: March 03, 2011, 18:34 »
I have chickens

The bedding is sawdust. Bit of straw can I dig in? Soil
Do I bag and leave a month or two.
Can I compost bin or will it stink?

Chicken poo is powerful stuff  you might be as well using it in layers to accelerate and enrich your compost.

I'd agree about putting it in the compost bin rather than the soil.  Straw can take quite a while to rot down and it's getting late in the season to be putting unrotted stuff on the soil.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

When I poo pick the lawn I just chuck the poo on the beds and it's fine. In fact everything is growing marvelously. When I clean out the coop I bung it all in the compost bin.
Haven't tried making tea but some got made naturally from rainwater in a bucket of poo which I chucked on the raspberries.
I don't know if it smells because I'm used to it!!

I apply fresh chicken poo to my garden in fall after everything is finished. It has the winter to mellow out.

In your winters I am surprised it gets a chance to break down and isnt just frozen. Gets damn cold out there

Mine produce massive amounts of the stuff, poo picked goes into compost bins and the coop when cleaned goes onto cack heap.
I was thinking of digging in a row on the brassica bed at the end of this year to compare with normal prepared bed to see if it would produce better, same or worse.

Before Christmas I put a load into our compost and it's Already turned into lovely compost, next door even asked if I had spare chicken poo for her compost! In the summer I also put it into the watering can and leave it for a few days does my plants lovely! We moved into our house in december two years ago ..... Nothing had been grown for years and the house itself had been empty for over a year!  Soifeel we have done well improving the soil from the dry light brown dust it was to crumbly dark brown lushness ! We have our hens to thank for this

I put mine into dalek style bin on it's own as I clean out, then spread in autumn, so is all different ages.
I used to just pile it, but it ended up spread all over the grass and the dog!!  Not pleasant.  Unfortunately I did not get the horse manure on the field early enough last year :tongue2:

Mine usually get put on the compost heap which is a mixture of woodchip, straw & of course chicken poo. I pour a watering can of water of it & leave it.

Sometimes though it just gets scattered about the plot & raked over, which is what i have done in the last week or two.

A neighbour on the plot down from me has just thrown his manure from his chicken on his plot for years & never had a problem, but did add it was ok to do this aslong as it was mixed with straw & woodchip.

It has about 2 months to break down before the real winter cold hits, but then that serves to break it up more, just as frost does to dirt clods. By planting time, it's well broken down and doesn't smell at all. Mind, it is a tad sticky to walk on in spring, but rotovating soon takes care of that along with a hosing of the tines.
