Hey im pretty new to this hen business, i currently have 3 east sussex hens who have been with me now for about 4/5 weeks. They do nothing but eat lol.

When i bought them the woman told me that they wernt laying at the moment due to the weather.

Well yesterday it came with massive suprise that one of my girls had layed an egg, the egg was perfect size and very clean. I checked this morning and there were no more there after lunch time i checked again and there was another egg in the same place as yesterday.

Do you think the other hens are going to start laying soon ?

It's a very exciting time as our hen's are all starting to lay 

Keep an eye on the combs as they go really red when they are ready to lay.

Hey Pauline,

I read about this on the net some where, after looking at my girls i cant say the one comb is redder than the others to me they all look bright red.

i wonder if the other girls can sence when eggs are being layed

I don't know how accurate it is, if at all, but I read somewhere that when a birds comb is very bright red then they are only 1 or 2 weeks away from laying. Although I don't know how that works on the Sumatra chicken

Everything comes to those who wait! And believe me, I waited and waited for my last lot of girls to get going. Its so worth it though. My breakfast of boiled eggs and marmite on Ryvitas is just so tasty thanks to my girlies!!!
