Cobnuts, Filberts, Hazelnuts
« on: February 14, 2011, 16:07 »
Hello,

I'm going to buy a couple of Cobnut trees and plant them next months, however, I've no idea:

1. which varieties will fare best in NE Scotland;
2. whether I need to plant two different varieties;
3. what soil they prefer (I have clay-loam); and
4. who a good supplier might be?

I'm going nuts (sorry) with the lack of info regarding more marginal areas for these trees!

Can anyone help?

I have seen hazelnuts growing in the wild in forests in Scotland so they must grow OK. Have you tried a local garden centre and to ask what they recommend.

Yes, I used to pick them as a kid, but wonder whether modern cultivars are less robust?

May try a few garden centers but I sometimes doubt their advice, especially when you see the amount of olive trees they stock!
