Bit confused as to which veg like horse manure and which don't cos i've been reading advice on growing onions that they don't like a rich soil so what type of soil do they like and how do you prepare the ground for them? I know Brassicas like a limed soil but do you manure the ground too?which is opposite too liming !! could any of you expert veg growers out there make a list for a confused plotter please ? e.g. potatoes / manure . Thanks Tony .

Don't apply lime at the same time as manure as it causes a chemical reaction that converts the Nitrogen in manure to Ammonia gas - which then drifts off and is wasted.  Solution to this is normally to apply manure in the Autumn, incorporate it into the soil, and then apply Lime in the spring. But you only really need lime for Brassicas (Sprouts, Cabbage etc.) if you soil is acidic - so worth testing the pH

Generally speaking don't apply Manure to Root crops - Parsnips, Carrots (Potatoes are not considered to be a root crop in this regard)
