I have some Amsterdam forcing for my cold frame which is compost based but I am unsure whether to water the seed this time of the year ?

feel if the compost is a little bit damp..........IMO you only need to water if it's really dry. Usually enough moisture comes up from the soil underneath.

thanks for your reply, the compost was damp so I sowed the carrots today without watering, I have quite a large frame made from timber and polycarb sheets and when I opened it this afternnoon a lovely blast of warm air came out as it had been sunny most of the day.

Last season I sowed two bays of Autumn King 2 Carrots.
Both bays were sown on the same day and watered in until they poked there heads through. One bay I watered regularly the other I left to its own devices.

The bay that was left and not watered produced fantastic carrots that were about 7 inches long and as thick as a reasonable size leek. The bay that was watered regularly produced Carrots that we at best about 4 inches long.

I have since been told that if you don't water the Carrots other than watering them in at the start the the root goes deeper into the soil searching for a drink.
99% Organic and 1% Slug Pellets.

Allotment holder since 27th May 2007.

I grow carrots in large claer plastic boxes with clear lids. I start these off in the greenhouse early and then move outside - I always get excellent results...

I thought about doing that. When do you sow and move outside.

Other option as I usually grow in large tubs (too big to move) is to cover with fleece for the early sowings. Do they warm up and therefore start growing quicker in tubs (even if outside) as I would have thought this was not as cold as the soil or is it the daylight that makes the differance.
Are you looking for an allotment (full or to share) in South East Sheffield. PM me for details.
