Sad loss of "Manky" after less than 2 weeks
« on: February 07, 2011, 17:35 »
We were a bit sad that one of our "free to good home" 3rd hand (at least) ex-batts died on Saturday after not quite 2 weeks with us. We had no info about their ages - she just seemed to be very old and frail, comb a bit purple-ish, falling out of the coop in the morning but managing to eat and drink OK then lifted in at bedtime.

She was not unhappy, but I suspect the stress of the move, to a very different household was too much.  I don't think we did anything wrong.

The other 4 seem fine - Henrietta (of course), Dot and Dash (Sea Cadet sons) and Whisky (because of her moult - malt!)

I very much doubt you did anything wrong the purple comb can be a sign of heart trouble which is very probable considering she is 3rd hand and may be rather old for an exbatt, so sorry xx. However hopefully the others will be happy and love their new happy home with their new forever mum  :)

Sorry for your loss. We had a recent loss ourselves and when you only have a few hens its quite a sad time. But if  you have been guided by the advice given in this website by all these chicken fanatics then you can be sure at least that you have done for your hen the best you can and it was not your fault.

Good luck with the rest of your flock :)
Two wrongs don't make a right but three lefts do.
