Goodbye Alexandra
« on: February 02, 2011, 19:52 »
This should probably go with the fox posts but little Alexandra our Spangled Russian Orloff bantam hen deserves a thread all to herself as she's already appeared several times on this site in happier circumstances.  Alas her free ranging days are over.  She had been taught by her son & daughter how to limbo under her electrified net and had been free ranging the garden for several months now but always returning to the run and house at night.  On Sunday morning she didn't appear at the back door as usual and a little pile of feathers in the hedge told the sad story, confirmed when she failed to roost that night.

A double tragedy since I was getting so concerned that she was getting bolder with her wanderings that I had sorted out a new more secure run for them and was in the process of painting the house ready to move them.  Unfortunately just a couple of days too late.

She raised 3 chicks and had 8 more hatched in the inccy in her 18months short life.  A little character who we'll miss.

So sorry for your loss HF, it is very sad to lose such a lovely girl.  The first picture you posted makes me smile (I've seen it on happier posts) and it is a lovely way to remind yourself what a great girl she was for you.  Be nice to yourself, big hugs.

So sorry for your loss - Orlofs are such nice looking birds and you don't see them very often

If anyone is wondering that the chick in photo one doesn't look much like an Orlof well actually it's a Vorwerk she was fostering.  Bantams are great mothers.
