Peas taste lovely fresh off the plant and all those pea pods for the compost heap. It's a very reasonable crop in two ways is the pea.  :D

For some reason I seem to do better with mangetout or sugarsnaps; nothing left for the compost heap except the dead plants afterwards and no pea-moth either (as long as you eat them whole and don't look too hard!)  ;)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I'd say if youi have a bit of room, grow some pea's.
We grew just 8 plants last year, that's not too many peas but they are yummy and soo worth the space! My kids would run out into the garden and raid the pea pods when they got the chance and didn't really give the rest of us a lookin. ::)

Cheers all! :)

After conversing with my workmate all day (an experienced gardener and fountain of my knowledge!) He also says that peas are not the heaviest cropper, therefor i reckon i will grow the alderman in one row as stated, but free up some more room by re-jigging(?) my allotment plan. This should give me room for another row of about 8ft, giving me about 25ft i reckon.
Would anybody suggest growing all the same pea, or try the tall Alderman in the purpose built bean row and another in the smaller row? Increasing the cropping period would be great, and a high yeilder also quite important.
 Thanks for your replies

if you sow an early pea like Kelvedon Wonder (or sugar ann snap peas) in mid march under a bit of fleece or netting to keep birds out and a bit of warmth in just till they start to show............then they should be harvested and out by mid June.
Cut the stems at soil level and then you can put something like french beans, pumpkins/courgettes or leeks in the space.
I've done that here for the last 3 years and it's worked a treat  :)

Is £5 reasonable for a 10metre roll of fleece?
