onions
« on: February 02, 2011, 21:05 »
I mentioned to an allotment neighbour that I was going to buy some onions sets, he remembered me when he saw some for sale at 10p per bag and brought me a bag of red and a bag of brown ones. It was kind of him but I am not sure what to do with them, they are labelled to be planted Oct. - Dec. and have 2 inch sprouting from some of the little onions. They are obviously last yrs stock, are they worth planting?

They'd be "Japanese"onions. (Over wintering).

As said, nothing to lose, but as soon as they are big enough to use, I'd start doing that. They are not great for storing, so I'd get some spring planted ones in for that.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

When would you plant them? I planted some in October and either the birds ate em or the cold killed most of em so I have some space ready.

Came home from work at 1 pm as it was my half day today, the sun was shining and it was a calm spring like day so went to my allotment, ha ha as soon as I got there the clouds came over and the wind tried to blow me over. Nevertheless  I managed to get all the onions planted, the soil had thawed out but was very sticky and wet.  The red ones are electric and the brown ones are shakespeare. X my fingers that I get a crop from them.
