Pear Trees & Grape Vines
« on: January 09, 2011, 12:34 »
Apologise I am not much of a gardener as I do not have a garden at home but I have my own stables which I moved to in September.

With the stables is a beautiful orchard with lots of fruit trees etc.  The place was competely overgrown for three years so a lot of hard work has gone into it the last few months and there is still some to be done.  I have cherries two kinds, pears, apples, hoards of damsons, something that smells of lemon that you can make tea with not sure what it is and I also have grape vines!!!

One of the problems I have though is the pears have brown speckles on them.  Im not too sure which disease it is but it is only the skin that has, inside the pears are fine and edible.  I wonder if someone could help to suggest what I can do with them whether I can spray them with something to stop this happening next year.

I would like to move the grape vine also but had lots of fruit on it this year so not sure whether I should or not.  It is in an awkward position right next to the entrance gate I wouldnt really know where else to move it to.  Can you move a grape vine or is best just to leave it where it is?

I'm afraid I don't know the answer to most of your questions, but I suspect the tea-plant is lemon verbena!
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Brown spots on pears is a bit too general to advise on. Does it look at all like this?

Otherwise, your best solution is to take a sample to your local garden centre so they can advise treatment, or at least describe it more accurately to them.

A fruiting grape vine is too old to be moved successfully. The roots go down very deep and to damage those main tap roots by digging will truly set it back enough that it will take years to recover. Best to live with it's current location.

Hello all,

l concur with Trillium grape vines do not like being moved, if you had a lot of fruit on it l would assume its over four years old, to late to move it but you can take lots of cuttings to cultivate new vines and now is the time to do that, just take cuttings with minimum of four buds on, push the sticks so two buds are covered into your chosen new ground and sit back and watch. :D
Do you know the variety of grape? If not, are they black, green or pink grapes?

Silky

P.S. can you state what area you are in on your profile please.

I was just about to say they look like scabs and then opened your photo and yes that is really similar to what it looked like.  I shall read up on that.

Thank you to all about the grapes, I thought it might be too old of a vine to move but I shall remove some clippings from the top of the vine that is overgrowing into the neighbours garden and plant them in another area.  My stables are south facing so they do get an awful lot of sun.

I have also put my location on now for you.

Oops forgot they were pinky/red grapes.  Some were very nice to eat others a bit sour but the horses loved them!!!  The skin was a bit thick though.
