Can i plant ramson bulbs now?
« on: February 12, 2011, 08:58 »
Its not too wet at the moment but rain is due this weekend and alot of it if the weather peeps are to go by.  Ofcourse my delivery of ramsons has been timed perfectly to hit the bad weather and the (lovely) bloke has given me 20 extra bulbs to find room for.

Im not really any good with bulbs and tend to stay away after many a crocus massacre (put them in when it was soggy and they melted and went furry).

Had to Google "ramsons" to find out what they are, so I'm not sure I'm going to be much help!  ::)

Wild garlic is usually found in damp woodland settings so should be at home being planted in damp conditions.

I do know that one of my sisters had some growing in her garden and had quite a lot of trouble stopping it from taking over. Sounds to me as if with "an extra 20" you might need quite a lot of space to grow them!  ;)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I've just looked it up and would agree with JayG  :)

I brought my bulbs back from Scotland in March 3 years ago, and just stuck them in the ground.  They come up every year, but I must admit, they haven't taken over yet!!  They are underneath my poplar tree.

Do you mind my asking where you got these please as I never knew what they were called, but saw them growing in a Welsh castle woodland once and was desperate to source them?

Thanks for such an interesting topic!

Oh thanks - I'll have a look! Are they best as bulbs or in the green?

I'm not sure VVG, but I'm sure someone will know. I bought bulbs but it wasn't this time of year, it was quite a bit later on.

I think Ramsbottom near Bury in the Ramson Bottom ie the bottom of the valley covered in ramsons...

A staple in any wild food walk I lead!

Mine came from Ebay, not sure if im allowed to put the link up but if i am i can find it if you would like  :)

I hope they take over as i love them!  I walk my dogs near a massive patch and it smells divine but i wouldnt want to eat those for the same reason lol.  But last year i had my first taste as our local farm shop stocked them and they were lovely in a spring veg risotto and as you can eat bulb, plant and flower a real frugal food  :D

It's probably illegal to dig them up but I've tried it a couple of times and never managed to get them to take. There are quite a few places I frequent where the woods are carpeted with them and smell is intense. Like savbo I think they are a great wild food but best eaten absolutely fresh which is why I've always wanted to grow them in the garden.
