Currant prunings
« on: January 04, 2011, 17:13 »
I have a few fruit bushes, Black, White and Red Currants and a Gooseberry, is it worth using the prunings as cuttings.
A few years back I cut back a flowering ornamental currant and stuck four bits in the ground along a hedge line I am promoting and three of them are growing nicely, can I do the same with the fruiting varieties and will they grow in well tended pots.

Can't see why not, give it a go  :)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Just make a slit in the ground with a spade, drop your hardwood cuttings in. you should leave 2 buds above ground 3-4 below. gently tread the soil closed. And leave it to mother nature :)
If your soils heavy then a little sand down the hole will help.

I pruned my blackcurrant about 3 years ago TR,  and the blackcurrant itself I found growing out of the side of our old patio, so it must have grown from a little pip!  Anyway, planted the prunings, but I did use rooting powder to be on the safe side, and 24 out of 30 grew.  I gave them all away once rooted, and as far as i know they are all doing well!

So I agree, give it a go!

Also I gave it a really hard prune this past autumn, as it was HUGE, and underneath I found 12 little bushes growing from where teh old branches had touched the ground, so you could do that too.  For the minute I can't think what that's called, is it layering where you peg the branch onto the ground and the roots grow from there?
