We're getting chooks for MIL, she's seen Silkies and has decided those are the ones for her, I'm not sure they are as she's never had chooks before.

They are primarily for eggs although she's already talking about hatching chicks this summer 

So what do you think?

not a chance if she wants eggs, they are the broodiest of all birds.

They don't like to get wet as they don't have very waterproof feathers.

Mustn't let their feet get muddy either.

Not really for a complete novice with dopey dogs, feral cats and a river running through the garden I think

I have 3 Silkie x Light Sussex chooks and they are very broody but dont seem to mind the rain and mud judging by the state they were in this afternoon.  Think they must dig with their heads as they were all caked in it.  Dirty Girls.

I would say that if you want them for eggs forget it! Mine don't lay particularly well, and have gone broody on numerous occasions. One has hatched some quail this year, and then some silkies later on in the year.

Also they do get very matted easily and muddy feet so do better undercover I find.
