First year of growing
« on: August 01, 2007, 16:58 »
Hi all, newbie here!

This has been my first year of growing vegetables in our garden and has been quite an experience! I don't think I could have picked a worse year!

Having spent all winter clearing the bottom of our garden (thistles, nettles, ground elder, etc) we created a rotation system but I forgot to manure up the new plot!

Since we started I have had never ending mind games with the rabbits from the nearby fields - they demolished a great crop of French beans, carrots, Kale, etc and despite fencing the whole plot they still found ways to get in - and my wife won't let me use a gun to get rid of them!

I never believed that growing your own veg could take over your life so much.....I can't wait to get down the bottom of the garden each day to monitor progress and have bored people witless talking about what;s happening!

I never knew you could feel such satisfaction (and joy!) at harvesting crops and the taste of home grown is ajoy to behold - I've fallen in love with beetrot, peas and broad beans and our kids have loved being involved too.

Depsite having the dreaded blight we managed to harvest over 10 kilos of spuds from the main crop (2 months early!) - having planted just 6 spuds originally!

Can anyone tell me - does this 'addiction' to growing your own ever fade or does it remain a key part of winter/spring/summer and autumn!

Hope I haven't bored anyone too much!

Well you've not bored me!

Think what next year will be like- assuming the weather is something like normal.

I'm afraid once you get the growing bug, you're stuck for life  :)

You never lose the satisfaction of eating your own produce!  It tastes NOTHING like shop stuff which is sprayed and put in cold rooms for ages!

Then when you get too old to bend down and dig, you start thinking aout raised beds, so you can carry on without bending down!!!! lol

Hi all - this is my first year as well and I am so chuffed as we've had potatoes, raspberries, beans, peas, strawberries, sweetcorn, onions and rhubarb and we still have growing cabbage, broccolli, leaks and cauliflower.  My kids have really got the bug as well and loved harvesting the peas and beans yesterday.  Even my toddler is amazed when we found the potatoes shouting wow everytime we found some.

My first year too - am so glad the excitement doesn't wear off. We now have the whole plot planted up, and I must say I am missing the digging and planting, so looking forward to the autumn!
