Any thoughts on Poultry Mix Complete?
« on: December 21, 2010, 14:55 »
I've just been to re-stock for the girls over Christmas and instead of buying the seperate pellets, corn and grit, I've bought a 15kg bag of poultry mix complete. Its does what is says on the bag :) it has layers pellets, corn, oyster shell, maize and flat pea things in it and they are hoovering it up. Has anyone got any previous experience of this and know whether it's any good? They do seem to be enjoying it, I'll know tonight what they're picking out or whether they're eating the lot, but I don't want to feed them something sub-standard with it being so cold xx
Many pets, a bloke and 2 kids....help!!!

I tried it once and they pecked out the stuff they wanted and then left the layers pellets scattered all over the floor  :(

Mine seem to spend the first ten minutes out of the hen house scattering the contents of their feeder all over the ground and the rest of the day picking out exactly what they want to eat...

I'd agree with Joyfull and Abacus. When I was feeding mine on meal they took the bits out they wanted and made a mess with the rest. Now I just give them pellets to eat during the day and they get some corn in the evening. I also leave a tray of mixed grit and oyster shell for them if they need it.

I used that type of feed for about 2 months had problems with pecking even with things to stop them getting bored. Changed to layer pellet and seperate grit . Iam now getting more eggs and no pecking.

They've been eating pellets for ages now and I've been giving them seperate corn and grit/oystershell, but I thought this would just be easier. They are picking at what they want, and making a right old mess with whats left. They're eating enough to get a full crop during a day, but I'll be switching back to pelletts, they seem to enjoy them more. Fussy so and sos :) And here was me thinking chickens ate anything they were given  :)
