Siberian Wallflowers already?
« on: November 12, 2010, 00:13 »
I've just transplanted about 100 good sized healthy Siberian wallflowers into my parents front gaden from a nursery bed on the plot.

But... I was surprised to see some had aleady come into flower.

Can anyone tell me please:
  • Is this normal for Siberian wallflowers?
  • Should I nip the flowers out or leave them to get on with it?
  • If they have flowered now, will they flower again in the Spring?

I've grown wallflowers before but this is my first time with Siberian.

Sorry Learner I've no idea - I thought I was quite well up on flowers but I obviously know diddly squat as I've never even heard of the Siberian ones!!!!

I'd nip the flowers off for now Learner. Unless you are lucky they tend to die back after flowering, and you don't want them doing that now :(

A bit of a cold snap should stop them trying to flower until until spring, hopefully.

Siberian wallflowers were quite common years ago but slipped from popularity... being replaced by mixed colour varieties.

My mum loves the vivid orange/yellow so asked me to look out for them. In the spring I came across a packet of seed......

They've grown well but the early flowering confused me..

Nipping out the flower tips (and keeping fingers crossed) makes good sense - thanks mumofstig

If anyone else has expierence of these little beauties I'd love to know.

Learner are they called Siberian Wallflower on the packet? I grow a couple of single colour ones as I prefer those to the mixed (although the mixed are lovely).

I've grown some single colour varieties too. Last year, as well as mixed, I tried scarlet something or other for our own front garden. It was quite impressive.

Siberian Wallflowers can be found here: Link

They are a particular type rather than just a single colour strain.

Does that make sense? I'm not sure it does  ::)

Thanks Learner for the link, I'll have a go at these next year - I love the one's I grow now, but I always like trying something new - and Lord know's, there's plenty out there to try!!!

You did say they are Siberian Learner ..... it's probably spring to them.

I have my spring wallflowers starting to flower now though and I think mum's advice is probably the best, although I hate pinching out flowers. Also have the snaps still going strong despite zero temperatures at night  ???

That's the problem with this garening lark - there are so many varieties of so many things.

It gets very hard to be selective in the end!
