Bumblefoot That Has Been Operated On
« on: November 05, 2010, 16:33 »
Hi I am looking for some advice on where to roost my bird, Carol had her foot operated on on Tuesday at the vets and the vet then put a poultice on for two days and she had her foot taped up, there is a scab on it now and the vet has left any dressing off it, I have her in the out house on a tiled floor and she asked me to bath it twice a day - her roost at the minute is a saw horse with a towel over it as it is a flat area for her to perch, I know her foot is giving her a bit of bother today but not sure whether its worth letting her sleep in the chicken coop overnight but obviously that will be on a perch and not sure if its too early really to do that, any ideas would be good :D

Hi, when my chooks had bumblefoot (5 at the same time ) I took them out of the coop and put them in "sick bay".

My other half basically knocked some pallets together in the outside store and I then put a very deep layer of hemcore (but shavings would be just as good) down so they were on a soft surface.

You don't really want your girl jumping up and down off a perch at the moment as you need as little trauma as possible whilst her foot heals.  She won't need loads of room for the sake of a week while she recovers so hopefully you can find her somewhere nice and quiet to recouperate.

Hi
Did your chicks get better?  Mine is depressed because she wants to be out, but, have to say her foot looks kind of the same before I went to the vets - I am soaking it twice a day, but not sure if I should just do it once - do you want to keep the scap slightly soft?  Just spoken to someone who has had chickens and he said the few he has had all died  so need to take all advice to see what happens with Carol.  Thanks ???

Hi, sorry I've taken so long to reply - I've been off the forum for a few weeks as life has just got manic all of a sudden!

All of my chickens have survived and are now back in the garden.  I am paranoid about their feet now though.

Is your chicken on an antibiotic?  I used to peel / cut off the scab every other day, try and tease out any noticable gunk (it's hard and not at all like the puss you'd expect) and rub an anitiseptic ointment all over the foot, as well as in the wound then dress the foot.

I did give them antibiotics for 10 days rather than the suggested 7 days as it didn't seem to be clearing up after a week.

Be warned, all in all my chickens were in the sick bay for about 5 weeks until I was happy the infection had gone and the wound had healed as I didn't want to let them out too early and get a repeat performance of bumblefoot.

Good luck. x

I too am paranoid about Bumblefoot after losing Monty to it. I check the girls feet everyday. I now believe that Monty got it through an injury to his foot when he was attacked by a fox the second time. His other injuries were commanding my attention, so I think I missed his foot. It really is the most nasty condition, I was slow in getting it seen to through ignorance, something which Ill always regret.
Well done to those who manage to get their chooks cured!!
