celeriac and straw

a couple of books recommend mulching celeriac with straw or bracken now - does everybody do this? Don't have straw so would shredded paper do or would it get too soggy?

Mine are nearly all harvested now so I won't be needing to do this. I would say though, that surely paper will get too soggy and allow frost to get to the bulbs which is what you are trying to prevent.
