Just to see how far the roots go down, I dug down to one today. I got two and a half foot down and the root was still disappearing into the soil.
At that point I gave up, this weed is a pure survivor.

It can go down 2 metres and was around at the time of the dinosaurs

Pete who has an allotment three up from me, says that he has been battling against Mares Tail on his plot for the past fifteen years and he still hasn't beat it.

Nobody has yet mentioned my favourite method of attack:
Use one of the deep root killers that you paint on the leaf /spikes and stem - all the way down to the ground. Be careful not to break the brittle spikes. Watch them daily until you see them going brown. Then repeat the painting with double the ammount of the stuff.
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DIG THEM OUT. They will just break of anf come back to haunt you.
I used the same method with bind weed that used to try to strangle our hydrangea bush. It eventually worked after about 2 years
Former biochemist, now experimenting and having fun. :-)

Re: Amicide wherefore art thou?

Have a serious problem with the dreaded Mares Tail - coming up through the tarmac drive. Suggestions of repeated treatments of Amicide before digging up driveway sounds wise but where / who can supply - ideally near Cheshire / North Wales?

The battle of Mares tail.
:) Thanks friends. seems like Amicide is no longer available - (even from Lansdowne, ta Shaun). Have settled for using Glyphosate to begin and then follow with 'Deep Root' which is based upon same base as Amicide. By the time we get round to doing some real warfare we will probably all have drowned. Will report back on progress in some month's time.
Cheers all.

i have this in one corner of the garden.  I am going to grass ot out this corner for at least 12 months. Then keep mowing it. The cuttings will be usefull as mullch and the mares tail will not like the constant cutting off of new shoots. Thats the plan
always have a target
