onions in store
« on: November 01, 2010, 19:48 »
Does anyone have any idea why my main crop onions that are in a frost free shed are going soft and rotten, they were all in perfect health when harvested.both red and white are going bad.

No, but I'll move your question over to Grow Your Own as that's what it's about  ::)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

This happened to me last season, the reason was that I cut the foliage and root growth off the bulb far to early before the onion had dried out.

It ruined my crop because by the end of October I had nothing left.
Did you leave the leaf growth on the Onion to wither away? Or like me did you cut it off?

cheer's fat belly, i have only taken the roots and the tops off this week ,they have been sat on a wire tray in the shed since hravesting and this weekend i started to make my onion strings, but i have had to throw quite a few away,,they looked fab on harvest day and all through the growing season, its just sad when this kind of thing happens, sometimes wonder if its worth keeping the allotment on when this happens

I know how you feel as the same has happened to me.
I will not be growing these next year as they are dirt cheap & we go through 1-2 a day.
Don't get disheartened as you could use the space to grow garlic or leeks which keep well & taste great.

Is there a white mold underneath your onions and the necks soft ,if so you have onion white rot . try growing on a different part of your plot next year .
