HELP!! RESISTANT RED MITES
« on: July 19, 2007, 12:47 »
Hope someone can offer some advice.

Discovered a large amount of red mites in the chicken coup last week. I have scrubbed the house inside and out with jeyes fluid and given the house a thick dusting with Barrier louse powder which says that it kills mites on poultry. I also gave the hens a good dusting.

When i checked again today i found a healthy community of red mites living in a deposit of louse powder nera the perch. I have redusted the hens again but i am beginning to wonder if this powder is working.

Can anyone offer advice.??

Hi there,

you may find Diatom, or MiteX better as they actually kill the mites. Red or Louse Barrier Mite Powder works as a repellent I find it good to powder my birds with. Diatom  on the other hand works by "dessicating" the mites outer body therefore killing them.
Here are a couple of web-sites you might (mite   ) find useful.

www.solwayfeeders.com

www.agil.com  -this website also sell a pretty lethal mite treatment from Germany if you have a serious problem

Good luck with eradicating your mites!

Absolutely - you need more than louse powder.

Decimite/mitex and a stalosan clean out. Nappy cream on the ends of the perches where they meet the walls, the mites get stiuck and you can see if you still have them

I've always dusted liberally with diatom and never had a red mite problem  :!:
