I have just about decided to give up on Alliums as i got white rot terrible  

A friend of mine who suffers from the same problem is about to plant his Garlic, when i asked about white rot he told me hes going to cover his garlic and onions in 4 inches of sawdust.

Never heard of this cure before, anybody else heard of it ? or even better anybody ever used this method and what are the results?

Is this the miracle cure ive been waiting for ? do i need to rush and buy some garlic?? lol.

O and a big bag of sawdust.

As the rot is in the soil, I can't see how a sawdust mulch would make any difference

If the cures were that simple, we woudn't be suffering from the problems would we?

(Don't try rhubarb for club root, that doesn't work either - field tested!).

Im sure my friend said he read about this in one of the monthly gardening magazines , i will ask him when i see him.

It was in Octobers Kitchen Garden Mag, the results were not conclusive, but worth further investigation.

You could try growing your onions as a bait. Plant as normal, but keep checking the roots for attack. As soon as you see an infected onion, dig it up and burn it. The fungus once germinated will have nothing to feed on and will die out. How many seasons this will take, no one no's. As far as i know there is no known cure, apart from not growing any member of the Allium family, for years.
