New Blackcurrants plants
« on: October 20, 2010, 12:40 »
I got 8 new Blackcurrant bushes this year, they did not friut but the bushes look healthy and rather large.

Should I prune, even if they have not fruited?

Keep reading different books and none agree with each other.

I was in a similar situation last year and just left the plants as they were.  Got plenty of fruit this year.  I don't know if that is the correct thing to do becuase like you, I read contradicting opinions.

I think they fruit on the second year's stems - others please correct me if I'm wrong. You can cut the tips off if your stems are too tall. I do know that you get new stems from the base each year, so after three years, you cut out about a third of the older wood which is a different colour - grey-brown, so that the new canes replace them, but you should leave the second year canes to fruit. Look on RHS site.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Thanks Debz and Goosegirl

Sounds like the best thing to do will be to leave well alone :D :D
