Percieved wisdom is that onions planted between carrots help to deter carrot fly. However, there is a lot of folklore in so called companion planting. Worth "googling" companion planting.
Ah well ! There is always next year !

It all depends on the crop. I've tried it but the onions suffer due to shading from the plant, or nutrient/water loss to the other plant. Sometimes the onion roots get crowded out and both plants don't do their best. Unless you've a lot of space for your plants, I wouldn't bother. However, some of the companion planting duos do work well. Louise Riotta's books are the best on the subject. Where I need garlic as companions, I grow the wild garlic and don't worry about how well they do/don't perform since I'm growing my main garlic separately. It's the smell that works, not particularly the plant.

I plant garlic around all of my veg - the slugs hate them.
Just use 1 segment  :D where  and in a few months you have new bulbs of garlic.
