Extra foodstuffs
« on: October 09, 2010, 21:16 »
I feed my chickens generally on layers in morning and corn in the eve but I will often cook up  some pasta, rice and mixed veg 1-2 week, in this mixture I often add a chopped boiled egg.  So many books say pasta is not a good choice but my birds adore it, and I'm notsure wether the boiled egg is a good idea either, any advice on this?

I would say in moderation, every so often in other words. I believe they need more of the proteins rather than carbs. I treat mine with veg rather than our uneaten foods. Dont think the cooked egg is a major problem but again keep it every so often. I am sure others will know better than I.

I don't like my chickens eating eggs it seems strange to me. And + the eggs are mine !!!!!! I mix up brocoli or spinach with boiling water layers pellets and corn as a treat they love it but most of the time leave the layers in the bowl I just give it back to them in the morning when they are not so fussy. I haven't tried pasta I was told it makes them fat

Well I'd stay away from pasta yes they love it but we love chocolate and thats not good for us either, too much carbs makes them fat, too fat gives them problrms laying egg's seeinga hen with a prolapse is awful, keep them off the carbs.   ;)
Layers in the morning bit of corn at night and whatever fresh greens they can scavenge during the day was all I ever fed mine

Pasta can cause severe sour crop in hens if they bolt it down, just leave it in a saucepan and see how it solidifies.
Pasta is off the menu now for my hens after actually seeing the effects .
Not worth the risk however much they like it.
