Ok i understand that when a bird first starts to lay that the eggs tend to be on the small side however one of my so called cream crested Legbars seems not quite right !! she has a very large crest almost polish where as the other looks to be breed standard( i did get these two girls from a breeder granted not one from this site but in PP Magazine. well back to my original reason one girl (poobar) has started to lay but the eggs are tiny almost Bantam size any assistance or advice please would be appreciated

Hens often lay one or two eggs of a smaller size when they first start laying but quickly settle at the size they will continue to lay for life.

Thanks for that Aunt Sally  it always helps to ask    I still love Poobar ( sorry about the name my nephew named her, hes 2) she comes over for a cuddle every time i go un the run

about 4cm in length and well the same round !!i think

They don't lay big eggs.  I think they average about 50 grams each which would be classified as small.


I'm looking for some information for you but it's proving difficult.

This site says they lay good sized eggs, so perhaps they will get bigger over the next few weeks.

How old is poobar? If she is still a pullet her eggs will be small and can take many weeks to get to normal size (normal for her breed anyway) and by years two and three they will be large. I would sooner a pullet lay small eggs rather than the giant ones that some pullets lay (often double and triple yolkers) as there is less chance of the egg getting stuck.

Sorry for the delay in returning this but Poobar is only 22weeks old this tuesday coming so i am very impressed that she started to lay as her sister shows no sign of the thought of producing eggs just yet and runs around the yard like a crazed youngster !! she has some speed.

The eggs which Poobar lays are very rich in colour both blue shell and yolk colour so thumbs up
