@ VVG, the best varieties may depend on where you are in the country - could you please edit your forum profile to show your location?

In the north, the growing period is shorter than in the south, and therefore you need to be careful about long-growing varieties further north.

I am in the Midlands; Derbyshire to be exact - not sure whether that makes me a South or a North.  Feels like North today...brrrrrrrr

But we will still have to guess that next time you post if you don't add the information to your personal profile!  ;)

Consider myself told off ;)
Have updated my profile now to reflect where I am. I can't remember seeing it in that level of detail when I first set up an account, but easy enough to change, granted.

No telling off, it's just common sense that the approximate whereabouts of someone asking a gardening question is often relevant to the answer.

Thanks anyway VVG!  :)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Sweet Nugget (Kings) works well in colder climes. I had a really good crop last year, despite it raining almost constantly from the end of June onwards  >:(. It's frozen quite well too.
My music teacher was right. If you have to make a mistake, make it good and big and loud; with a bit of luck people will think that it was always meant to be like that.

I can testify to having to avoid mixing types. The first year I grew my corn it was brilliant but last year I made the mistake of starting too early and managed to kill off stuff by putting it outside to harden off and then forgetting it! I then had to start again from scratch and had two half packets of left over corn. One from the year before and the other current but both different. The result was not good. I got corn but because of the late start, much of it was not fully developed and the ones that were tasted bland - presumably because of the cross pollination. I will be more patient this year.

I never thought about cross pollination.  My allotment is one of 90 in our community.  Hhhhhmmmm - a whole new perspective on being neighbourly!   ;)
When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!

Thank you for this!  I know I didn't start this stream of conversation, but I am always looking for advice on varieties.  In the states, this corn is called Bread and Butter!

Now I have a lottie, I'm going to try growing sweetcorn for the first time too, Incredible F1. They were in a multi pack of seeds from Wilks. Any views on them? They are reputed to be really sweet  :)

Incredible were lovely the year before last  :) but last year they produced some weird cobs that couldn't make up their mind whether they were male or female and so didn't set :(

I'm trying a different one this year............but hopefully yours will not have the same problems
