Beware the ides of July
« on: July 13, 2007, 16:21 »
I listen to the radio through the night.
LAST NIGHT i WAS LUCKY TO HEAR A GARDENING EXPERT who warned us that on 15th. July especially in this rainy weather the potato/ tomato blight will strike with a vengence -- unless 1) you can get your tomato leaves dry,        ................. how do do this?
or you spray with copper fungicide.
WEll I been and got it ........(very expensive) but tomorrow all my tomatos will be sprayed and the B. Blight will not get 'em.

Is this common knowledge :?:  :?: And does anyone know why the spwecific date 15 July :?:
Former biochemist, now experimenting and having fun. :-)

Am fairly convinced that july 15th is going to be way after a lot of people noticed blight on their plots!!

My blight has'nt waited for st. swithens day.  Its been in the potatos for weeks and the outside tomatos look as if they've had it as well.
Roll on next year, write off this one.
As the great Percy Thrower used to say
" OI THINK THE ANSWER LIES IN THE SOIL"

We've got blight already.  It's our first year.  The toms I planted early seem to have suffered most and the more recent ones are still OK.  Does the Ides of July theory mean that blight will not hit after that 15th date???  Does blight sweep across all the plot?  What are we going to do?  Shall I spray?  Can I protect organically?  Shall I give up now?

Well, I have sprayed all my tomatoes this morning with Copper oxychloride fungicide. £5 odd for 10 sachets from the local garden centre.
1 sachet per litre so that was only 50p and I think - no I'm sure my 16 tomatato plants will be OK.
But if we get a lot more warm wet weather, I'll spray them again every 2 weeks :D

I blame that b----- Sven the swede, if he will go round useting the big fellow! I had to dig all my toms up because of blight is there a way of treating the soil before you plant that stops this sort of thing happening?
I know less today than I did yesterday, and I knew nothing then!
