Spinach in autumn?
« on: September 28, 2010, 18:53 »
I might very well be wrong since I'm a newbie, but I thought I would be able to grow spinach this time of the year (and the instructions on the packet suggest so). But the plants remained tiny for a long, long time, and then today I noticed they had started bolting! I didn't even know that something so small could bolt! And you can't really say that the weather has been hot... Should I try again (maybe a different variety), or is it only a spring veggie?

I did, but the plants have been sitting there with just a couple of tiny real leaves for several weeks.

Spinach would need to be sown in early August for cropping in October. It will as you pointed out only grow very slowly in September due to the shorter days of light and the cooling weather. However it can be forced under a cloche or in a greenhouse and used as baby spinach by sowing in September.

I find more and more seed companies are promoting early and late vegetable sowings which in reality wont grow successfully.
