I'd appreciate advice as well, if they can survive up here in the geelid north.

Hi,

I'm thinking of growing white winter onions myself. previously. i had grown red barons but they didn't grow big, as i expected them to. what i propose to do now is grow them around November, put them into the soil about a 3rd of a way in and cover it all with a mesh to prevent birds picking them out, should they do so.  Reason why i am not pushing them right in is that my soil is not that soft and sandy and i think the hard soil prevents them from growing big.

just this week i laid a fresh layer commercial manure from the garden centre and i might get some of that strong stuff 6x fertilizer and sprinkle bit of that too. wait a month and then plant the white onion bulbs.

well that's my plan so let's see if it works

I grew some last year for the first time and they were a success, 50 red and 100 white I was eating them from May onwards. Very few went to seed unlike the summer ones I grew where most of the reds went to seed. Mine survived what was a pretty cold winter so you should be ok. Dont grow too many as they only keep for a few months and are meant to tide you over until your main spring planted onions arrive in July/Aug.

I grew 'senshyu' and mine survived temps down to -15 up here last winter and gave an excellent crop with bulbs up to 1 pound in weight. I got another bag of sets and will be putting them in when I get some free space.
