Is it possible to put plaster on chickens toe
« on: September 23, 2010, 15:34 »
My chickens lost her middle toe nail and we are dunking in salt water to clean it but is it possible to wrap a plaster round it to protect it til it heals a bit more?

have a chat with Grannie Annie - she had a chicken that nearly lost a toe and she managed to strap it up, luckily the toe stayed attached and she is now living happily with me (the chicken not Grannie Annie  ::)).
Staffies are softer than you think.

Imo , plasters are overated. You get faster healing if the damage is left open and less chance of anerobic (sp?) infection.
A squirt of Gentian violet (purple spray) would be good.
One of its main uses is on sheeps feet, no chance of getting a band-aid to stick on them. :)

We had a bird with a bleeding toe from a torn nail. Once on a high wall they think they're eagles and gravity proves that to be incorrect. Washed, put on flour (as no wound powder available)  to stop bleeding, wrapped in tissue and then lots of sellotape. To our surprise, it lasted three days. When it got too tatty it was taken off, but the flour 'plaster' stayed in place another day.
