Thinning down raspberry bush
« on: September 22, 2010, 21:27 »
Hi

With the new plot I've inherited (amongst other things) a respberry bush. I know it needs thinning down and the yellowish stems have to go. Was wondering if they just need cutting and if so how far down.

Also, how ruthless should I be? Shall I take no prisoners and cut down any stem that seems 'on the turn' or just concentrate on the ones which are obviously on their last legs?

Thanks
G

Don't be too brutal with thinning just yet - you need to know if you have summer or fall fruiting raspberries. For the time being just trim out what's obviously dying, is really in the way, etc. cut pretty close to the base. As the season moves along, old stems will die off on their own and you can pull those out as well.
